Energy!!

I thought it would be a good idea to take a little look at energy, with it being in the news so much at the moment.

There are two main stories that have been in the news all week, and part of the previous week; the protest for insulate Britain; and energy companies going bust due to the increase in supply fees. Although each can be opened up in so many different ways, and you can look at careers on an extremely broad scale, like controlling a protest, parliamentary activity to support consumers and Ofgem intervention, I'm going to make them more focused on the core principles of these stories.

As usual, there are so many different companies, opportunities and job roles, so I will only be giving a snap shot of this.

Ironically, these two points I am covering do interlink as well, which I will go into later.

Insulate Britain

So if we look directly at insulation, there are a couple of things to look at: the manufacturing of the products; and the installation of the products.

Here are two different production companies, and a selection of the job roles that they have within them:

Industrial Solutions (USA based)

> Maintenance (equipment maintenance)

> Stitcher

> Purchasing Manager

> Programmer/Estimator (drafting, CAD, waterjet programming, costing, quality control/first article inspection manager)

> Waterjet/Production Assistant

> Production Manager

Knauf Insulations (international company)

> Engineering Manager

> Electrical Technician

> Maintenance Planner

> Industrial Digital Engineer

> Customer Service Adviser

> Financial Accountant

As for installation, it can vary on the product and the company. Some trades like building and carpentry & joinery install a lot of insulation products. Then there are specific insulation companies that can have some of the following job roles:

> Thermal Insulation Engineer

> Cavity Insulation Installer

> Sales Manager

> Energy Surveyor

> Compliance Manager

> Install Manager

Link - So the theory behind insulation is that it reduces the use of your heating, as it retains the heat for longer periods. Which then leads into two positive outcomes; reduces the amount of energy used, so reduces the cost; and reduces the chance of becoming really ill or even dying from the cold, when unable to keep the accommodation warm.

However, I'm not going to to give my own opinion, merely the theories and information that is widely available, as stated above.

Energy Producers

Due to there being a number sources of energy, it is hard to give much of an insight into the different careers available, but I will try to give a bit of a snippet.

Energy sources are put into 3 categories; fossil fuels; renewable energy; and nuclear.

There are a few different initiatives (and have been for a number of years) on people providing a proportion of their own (renewable) energy, like solar panels. However, just like the large companies that provide the different types of renewable energy, the power output is between medium to very low, but nuclear and fossil fuels are high or very high. So for the foreseeable future, there is still a lot of demand for these sources of energy, and the jobs that come with them.

Here are a selection of job roles that fall into all 3 categories:

* Power station worker (Electricity generation worker)

* Energy engineer

* Gas service technician

* Heating and ventilation engineer

* Nuclear Engineer

* Offshore drilling worker

* Oil and gas operation manager

* Roustabout (Oil rig worker/oil and gas worker)

* Wind turbine technician

* Quarry worker

* Technical engineer

* Solar panel installer

All of the job roles I have stated, in both of these sections covered in this blog, have different entry requirements. The National Careers Service can provide information on some of these roles, or associated companies can on either the information about people in these roles or in their vacancies, or through using a search engine to find information on the specific role.

As a service we are always here to support you with finding information on education or careers and helping you to identify what may suit your skills and interests.
