Bonfire Night

I wanted to relate todays blog to the history of the day - Bonfire Night. Although the main purpose of the celebration is the failure of the gunpowder plot, which was a plan to blow up the houses of parliament and kill King James I. In theory it was in relation to a religious war, King James I was a Protestant and the gunpowder plot gang were Catholics, a lot of people go with the main link of it being at the house of lords and involving MP's.

So, let's have a little look at some of the job roles in religion and next week it will be in parliament, and some of the training courses/degrees associated with them.

Religion

Some roles, that are more on the support side, have their own specific requirements but are not usually specific to the religion. So, things like cleaners, maintenance and administrators do not usually ask for applicants to be part of the religion or practising the faith. However, other job roles are very reliant on applicants already practising the faith, and put it as an essential requirement in the information on the vacancy. A religious leader, assistants and any role that requires teaching the faith will often look specifically at a degree, apprenticeship or applying directly as the entry routes too. The related subjects to do a course or degree in could be religion, theology and philosophy, but specific subjects aren't always required. Different faiths often provide specialist training courses too. Chaplains, religious leaders (Minister, priest, vicar), and evangelist are some of the specialist job roles in the different religions. In addition to these, there are roles in religious charities too, which can be outreach work helping people in other countries, or specifically within their faith. Here are a couple of examples: ICI Manager Administration - Posted By: Islamic Center of Irving; Project Administrator - Posted by: India Overseas Trust; Youth Worker - Posted By: Croydon Islamic Community Trust; Lived Experience Representative - Posted By: Christians Against Poverty.

Although there are a wide range of degrees that include religious studies, there are few that are specific to faith in the UK.

These are only a snapshot, but I think that it gives a good insight into the variety of work in the religious sector.
