Sell Sell Sell

It has been quite a controversial issue for many years on whether special occasions like Christmas are hyped up commercial enterprises, rather than standing for what they were originally intended.

Although there are many debatable points about the negatives and positives associated with the different occasions a lot of us celebrate in the UK, something I thought was quite important was the economy.

In particular at this time off year there are already jobs being advertised for Christmas temps in the retail industry. Furthermore the increase in retail sales is quite shocking. In December 2017 49.76 billion was spent in retail sales, and then in January 2018 it was 28.31 billion. Making it a decline in over 20 billion (www.statista.com).

There are increases and declines throughout the year. The next noticeable increase is in March. It would be interesting to find out whether this is related to Easter, the change in weather, or something else.

The biggest increase (other than December) is in June. In June 2018 39.86 billion was spent in the retail industry. The guardian news paper wrote an article that the world cup and increase in heat were the reason for the growth. In spite of this, looking at the statistics shows that there is always a big increase at this time of year. Although the total percentage of growth in summer 2017 was 2.1%, but then summer 2018 was 3.4% (www.ons.gov.uk). Therefore you could assume these were contributing factors. Nevertheless, there are noticeable growths each year, so it could be a mere coincidence.

Consequently the increase in jobs and sales are most definitely positive contributions to the economy.
