Balancing

Returning from a relaxing week away with my family made me think about the work life balance.

The battle of balancing work and family life can become quite stressful, and sometimes a week or two away is just what you need to recharge your batteries.

So it's interesting to see that work related stress costs Britain 10.4 million working days per year (www.mentalhealth.org.uk).

The Mental Health Foundation (www.mentalhealth.org.uk) advise that’ a key way to protect your mental health against the potential detrimental effects of work related stress is to ensure you have a work life balance.'

Some key points to consider are:

* Work smart, not long.

* Take proper breaks at work.

* Try to draw a line between work and leisure.

* Reduce stress through exercise, relaxation, or hobbies.

* Recognise the importance of protective factors, including exercise, leisure activities and friendships. Try to ensure these are not sacrificed by working longer hours.

Sometimes the demands of the job can make this difficult, but taking the relationship seriously of work related stress and your mental health is key in getting a good work life balance.
