World Autism Awareness Week

With it being 'World Autism Awareness Week' I wanted to make a point of sharing some useful information relating to careers. I am going to open it up a little more due to statistical information available, and that autism can often be accompanied with other learning difficulties.

It can be quite daunting for people with autism and other disabilities, along with their loved ones, on whether they will be accepted i the world of work. Also, whether their specific needs will be accommodated appropriately within these roles.

There are different programmes available across the UK to offer more direct support in gaining and sustaining employment for people with disabilities and learning difficulties.

In different areas of the East Midlands there are cafe's that only employ people with learning difficulties. The job centres and local council should have details on what is available locally. However the Shaw Trust and Scope are a National charity that supports people with disabilities into employment.

Anne Hagerty has discussed autism and her asperges in a lot of interviews since her appearance in the Jungle. The previous definitions that she discusses can still be relevant today.

It's good to look around us and take note of people that have done very well for themselves, even though they feel that they have had set backs due to their learning difficulties:

Daniel Radcliffe has a mild case of dyspraxia. Famous for his role has Harry Potter. You would never think that he struggles to tie his own shoe laces.

Vince Vaughn another famous actor who has starred in films like wedding crashers, the internship, and Four Christmases. Has ADD and Dyslexia. He struggled to read and virtually stopped trying in order to avoid the embarrassment while at school.

The famous singer and actor Cher has suffered with dyslexia all of her life. Although she has stated that she often found it difficult to read movie scripts, she refused to let it hold her back. Her most recent role in Mama Mia definitely helped her to stand out from the crowd!

Personally, I think it makes you question whether it should be more about educating able people in how to accommodate people with disabilities and learning difficulties in order to help with them being the largest percentage of the unemployed (48.7% of people with disabilities are unemployed).
